The Embassy of Italy in Ulaanbaatar, in cooperation with the National University of Mongolia, organized a dialogue on science, innovation, and international cooperation, featuring an online lecture by scientist Ersilia Vaudo (European Space Agency) entitled “Space: an endless adventure.”
Ms. Undraa Agvaanluvsan, Chair of the Italy–Mongolia Interparliamentary Friendship Group and nuclear scientist, also took part, sharing her academic experience at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste.
The event, attended by numerous students, professors, and researchers from the National University of Mongolia, also provided an opportunity to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pakistani scientist Abdus Salam, after whom the Trieste center is named.
The initiative is part of Italy’s growing commitment to science diplomacy and the promotion of talent, strengthening dialogue with Mongolia in this important field. Space, in particular, represents a promising sector for academic and scientific cooperation between the two countries. Mongolian astronaut Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa was the second astronaut in Asia to take part in a space mission, and Mongolia is currently conducting research programs in various fields related to space studies.
The Vice-Rector of the National University of Mongolia, Prof. Baatarchuluun, opened the lecture together with Ambassador Giovanna Piccarreta, recalling Italy’s important contribution to science, from Galileo Galilei to the present day and to distinguished figures such as Giorgio Parisi and Rita Levi-Montalcini. The latter is honored on April 22, the date of her birth, when the Italian Research Day in the World is celebrated.
The Ambassador also highlighted the opportunity offered to Mongolian students by the Invest Your Talent in Italy program, which has been extended to Mongolia starting from 2026, reaffirming Italy’s commitment to promoting young talent in the country.
